Mind Over Messy has been a Journey.
I first discovered Mindful Living and my need for it, when my mom passed away suddenly over 10 years ago. We then had several other losses in our family that followed just as suddenly and tragically. It served as a wakeup call for me.
I had been living my life without really thinking about leaving a legacy or how I wanted people to remember me.
I was mostly getting by, dealing with what came my way, often finding myself in negative circumstances where I was trying to remain positive.
My life just wasn’t aligned with who I wanted to be and it took understanding that time is more valuable than I’d imagined, to set me on a path to be PRESENT.
I decided I wanted to choose happiness as much as possible, create a work-life that suited me, eat best for my body but not make myself crazy about it, and have time for things that I found enjoyable – such as travel, DIY projects, and enjoying movies on the couch with popcorn.
As I was exploring what I was thinking of as “mindful living,” I quickly realized that life is messy.
It’s not so easy to eat fresh and clean ingredients 24/7. It was hard to find quiet to meditate. My kids often fell apart (see: Confessions of a Mom of Sensitive Kids) and chaos seemed more common than not.
Instead of seeking a calm, unchallenging life, I embraced the chaos. I found calm in the chaos, in other words.
That’s how Mind Over Messy was born. I wanted people to feel there is no perfect. That you can share, live, and be yourself and that includes struggle, happiness, joy, problems, and imperfections galore.
We need to be mindful in the messiness of our lives, rather than preach some perfect existence that’s impossible to achieve.
Mindful living can be easier.
Now, we cook our own food with healthy ingredients when we can, but I also use premixed taco seasoning because try as I might – the kids just won’t eat the whole made healthier version (same with Ranch dressing!).
We also love a s’mores night in the backyard, no-sugar-added sangria, and a good old fashioned family barbecue.
I find there’s usually a “better” way instead of a “best” way for doing things. Which involves putting our happiness and sanity before living a life of “shoulds”.
Hopefully, you’ll find this website fun, informative, connective, and a place to gather and explore ideas that have multiple solutions.
